Why did you want to go to Graduate School in Japan?
My desire to go studying in Japan comes from my childhood where I’ve been exposed to Japanese anime, manga and video games. As a result, I wanted to visit Japan one day and see the land of the Samurai with my own eyes. Then after my studies in Tunisia where I got a master’s degree, I wanted to pursue a doctoral course. Back in my country Gabon, I had this opportunity to apply for the Japanese scholarship offered by MEXT.
Why did you choose Chuo University Graduate School?
Actually, I did not choose Chuo University but Chuo University chose me. In other words, when I applied for the MEXT scholarship, I selected three universities and Chuo University was the first that responded me at time for my application to be accepted by the Ministry of Education of Japan.
About your research in graduate school and reasons why you’re interested in your research topic
My research subject is about Social and Business Entrepreneurs in sub-Saharan Africa. The theme of my thesis is: Factors Influencing Entrepreneurial Intentions, Decisions and Operations: A Study of The Impact of Personal and Business Environmental Factors on Social and Commercial Entrepreneurship in Gabon.
My research method is a mixing of quantitative and qualitative methods.
My interest in this topic comes first from my entrepreneurial background. Back in my country, I used to be an entrepreneur and I started my own business. I strongly believe that entrepreneurship is one of the keys to the socioeconomic development of Africa. Secondly, I wanted my research to benefit society.
I chose to study social entrepreneurship in order to fulfill that goal and find some solutions to the socioeconomic problems people are facing in Gabon and in Africa such as unemployment, low quality education, gender discrimination, and so forth.
Good things about enrolling in Chuo University Graduate School
Since I’ve been at Chuo University, the staff from the international center and graduate school office have tremendously helped me out with my studies and my daily life in Japan.
I think one of the good things about enrolling in Chuo University Graduate school is my academic supervisor professor Hayashi. He is a very
gentle, comprehensive and supportive person and I’m very lucky to carry out my research with him. Another good thing is I remember in my first year of doctoral program, I needed a new laptop but I didn’t have any idea where to buy one at an affordable price. One of my professors in graduate school, professor Ishikawa, guided me in my search and helped me to buy a good PC.
What kind of place is the graduate school to you?
First, I would say, as the only international student from Africa at Chuo University I never felt unwelcomed or never experienced any discrimination.
Then, graduate school has become like a family to me in Japan. I could make many friends that made me enjoy my studies at Chuo University and my staying in Japan.
A message for those who wish to enter graduate school
As a word of encouragement for those who wish to enter graduate school, I would say that Chuo University is one of the best universities in Japan. Graduate school in Chuo University has excellent professors, good staff and good facilities. It’s the ideal place for both Japanese and foreigners’ students who want to pursue their Masters or Ph.D. I definitely recommend students to enter graduate school. They won’t regret it.
