This study investigated trajectories of Foreign Language Enjoyment—personal (FLE–Personal) and social (FLE–Social)—and Motivation in Taiwanese and Japanese students during a six-week online collaborative English learning course, and tested whether country moderated these trajectories. Data from four measurement waves (T1–T4) were analyzed using linear mixed-effects regression with Time, Country, and their interaction as fixed effects and participant ID as a random effect. Estimated marginal means and Tukey-adjusted contrasts were computed to assess temporal change and between-country differences. Results indicated consistent increases in both enjoyment dimensions and motivation across time, supporting H1. Country effects were negligible for both FLE dimensions, and although a single divergence emerged for Motivation at T2 (Japan > Taiwan, p = .040), this difference did not persist at later waves, consistent with H2. These findings suggest that temporal dynamics, rather than nationality, shaped affective and motivational growth. Methodologically, the longitudinal mixed-effects approach captured within-person change while accommodating unequal group sizes, illustrating its value for applied linguistics research on affective development.
