Research Institutes

The Institute of Comparative Law in Japan was founded in 1948, the first such institute in Japan. Since then, it has earned a great reputation for the leading research it has conducted in the field.

The Institute has been actively engaged in research, forming organizations comprising Institute staff as well as outstanding external researchers to undertake joint research projects that focus on a number of themes.

Research results are published in the quarterly journal Hikakuho Zasshi (Comparative Law Review; see Statistics) in the Institute's monographs, as well as in many other forums, such as research conferences.

The Institute is also actively involved in academic exchange with other universities and research facilities in and outside Japan. As well as pursuing exchange of papers and information, it also arranges international symposia and lectures by visiting foreign researchers.

The Institute of Accounting Research was founded in 1948, for research into such fields as the practice and theory of corporate accounting, tax matters, and corporate legislation and regulation.

Eventually, the Research and Documents Section broke away to become the Institute of Business Research. Today, the Institute of Accounting Research focuses primarily on lectures designed to educate and provide guidance to students seeking to become professionals or wish to obtain bookkeeping certification, business owners or managers, or heads of accounting divisions. Its nature, therefore, is slightly different than the University's other institutes.

Founded in 1964, the Institute of Economic Research was initiated as a research institute attached to the educational foundation of Chuo University, with the objective of promoting joint research and studies into the realities of the Japanese and world economies, conducting research under contract, and holding seminars and lectures for the public.

The research engaged in by the Institute is primarily joint research conducted by project teams. The projects are of two types: research groups and working groups. Findings from research activities are published every three years, in the former case, in Kenkyu Sosho (Research Monographs), and in the latter case, in Keizai Kenkyujo Nenpo (Annual of the Institute of Economic Research).

The research project teams actively publicize their work, frequently holding public seminars and research meetings.

The Facility's library has a collection with a great emphasis on U.S. and U.K. government publications on economic issues and OECD documents.

The Institute of Business Research was founded in 1979 with the aim of conducting theoretical and empirical research of companies and businesses.

Joint teams made up of researchers with specialities in such fields as business administration, accounting, commerce, finance, and economics, work together with visiting fellows and assistant researchers to conduct research activities. The research findings of the research team are made public through such publications as Kenkyu Sosho (Research Series) or the periodical Kigyo Kenkyu (Corporate Research Reports). And the many public lectures and research meetings where these findings are presented are attended by a large number of people.

The Institute has an active program of international exchange, including international collaborative research, accepting foreign researchers, and exchanging papers with overseas research facilities.researchers.

Chuo University’s Institute of Cultural Sciences was founded on 13 November 1978 for the purpose of advancing our understanding of culture and cultural issues through collaborative research. What makes the Institute unique is that its members can participate in research beyond their individual areas of expertise by collaborating with other members coming from diverse disciplines across a broad range of areas. The Institute provides support for its members to conduct research on their theme for Research Project team or Large Research Collaboration Project team. Teams are made up of a combination of full-time Chuo University faculty members, visiting researchers from other universities, and doctoral students who may join as associate researchers.

　1.    To conduct collaborative research relating to cultural sciences.

　2.    To acquire and archive research materials.

　3.    To publish research results.

　4.    To hold workshops and lectures.

　5.    To provide necessary practical support for achieving the above aims.

The Institute of Health and Sports Science was founded to conduct joint research and thus contribute to the advancement of learning in the fields of Health and Sports Science. It is currently active in 12 fields of research, including student mental health, student fitness, effects of physical education, athletic fitness, outdoor sports, swimming coaching, the health of the middle-aged and elderly, life-long sports, classical martial arts, conditioning, ski-sports culture, exercise physiology, and high-altitude training.

Since its founding in 1992, the main focus of the Institute of Science and Engineering has been joint and project research. The Institute strives to ensure that in the process of furthering synergetic, interdisciplinary research, however, it remains a center both for improving science and technology and pursuing advances in leading-edge science and technology.
The Institute actively promotes joint research with corporations and transfer of technologies. Through close cooperation and coordination of various internal bodies, such as the Research and Development Initiatives, the Institute aims to build Chuo University's own original cycle for creating intellectual property (creating, protecting, and utilizing intellectual property, and nurturing human resources).

The Institute of Policy and Cultural Studies was founded to develop comprehensive and multi-angled research methodologies for studies in policy and culture, with a view to contributing to the achievement by the international community of harmony between the peoples of the world.
 

The Institute engages in joint research and studies, as well as convening research meetings, lectures and symposia in matters of policy and culture as they impact on all aspects of human activity, from daily life to the broad global arena. The central projects are The Place of Japan in the 21st Century, and Images of Japan in the Textbooks of the World. People from both the University and other arenas are welcome to participate in its research meetings, lectures, and symposia.
