Chuo to Reorganize the Faculty of Economics from Four to Two Departments (Under Development)

* The plan is under development and subject to change depending on future considerations.

Chuo University (located in Hachioji-shi, Tokyo / President:KAWAI Hisashi) will reorganize its Faculty of Economics into two departments, effective April 2027. The plan aims to help develop individuals equipped with the ability to successfully apply their knowledge; in other words, individuals with the intelligence and initiative to play an active role in the era of Society 5.0.

Currently, the Faculty consists of four departments: the Department of Economics, the Department of Economic Systems and Information Analysis, the Department of International Economics, and the Department of Public and Environmental Economics. These will be reorganized into two departments: the Department of Economics and the Department of Society and Economics (tentative names). Through this reorganization, the university will provide students with more systematic and focused learning experiences in economics and related fields. It seeks to “deepen (shinka — 深化)” and “advance (shinka — 進化)” its educational system to address the increasingly complicated and diverse issues that modern society faces.

The Faculty of Economics is increasingly committed to nurturing economic experts capable of approaching problems with cool heads, warm hearts, and a global perspective. Therefore, the faculty is dedicated to training economic professionals who can thrive in all aspects of future society.

Unique Characteristics of the Future Departments

Department of Economics (tentative name):
In this department, students will engage in an in-depth study of economic theory, grounded in microeconomics and macroeconomics. They will be expected to develop analytical skills that enable them to grasp the essence of a wide range of issues— spanning business, industries, international affairs, and environmental challenges— and to formulate policy proposals based on theoretical insights and data analysis.

Department of Society and Economics (tentative name):
In this department, students will engage in a broad curriculum studying a wide range of subjects from introductory microeconomics and macroeconomics to Marxian economics, history, systems, management, accounting, and statistics. They will be expected to cultivate practical skills, and this will allow them to explore and pursue optimal solutions to complex issues — such as poverty, minority and gender issues, and regional disparities —which involve diverse perspectives.
