Intermediate Report by Students Selected as SPRING’s Scholarship Research
Chuo University has been selected for the “Support for Pioneering Research Initiated by the Next Generation (SPRING)*” from AY2024. In line with this, Chuo University has launched the “Chuo Promotion for Research Activities in Doctoral Courses (D-CPRA).” It provides various supports to the selected students, from now on the SPRING scholarship researchers, such as studying abroad, overseas dispatching research, development of career path, etc.
*SPRING is a program supported by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) with aims to help doctoral students concentrate on challenging and integrative research free from existing frameworks, by providing a stable continuous environment over several years. The environment will be improved by aiding students with 2.4 million yen annually which is equivalent to their living expenses and 250 thousand yen annually as an expense for conducting research. Ultimately, the program aims to foster doctoral human resources who can be active in diverse career paths.
On November 1st, the SPRING scholarship researchers gave interim reports at Tama Campus. They reported how their studies are progressing and presented their accomplishments followed by a Q&A. The session was a good opportunity for them to convey their studies to others as well as glancing at cutting-edge research in unknown areas.
Furthermore, this fall, five students were elected as participants in the overseas training support system. The system requires participants SPRING scholarship researchers to design their training programs by themselves, and it financially supports those who wish to study abroad or attend overseas training with their travel fees and so on. The participating students will have a great opportunity to study their major in depth in a foreign country, and not only be able to interact with local researchers, but they are expected to willingly work on challenging and integrated studies beyond their current major and gain new transferable skills.
