2018 Japan-Taiwan University Presidents’ Forum

June 7 marked this year’s 2018 Japan-Taiwan University Presidents’ Forum, which took place at the RIHGA Royal Hotel Hiroshima, and Chuo’s Vice President, Hisashi Kawai and the Director of the International Center, Hiroshi Shirai attended.

This is a joint forum supported by the Japan Committee of Universities for International Exchange (JACUIE) and the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET).  There were 73 institutions, including 67 universities (37 national, 6 public, and 24 private), participating from Japan and 40 institutions, including 35 universities, from Taiwan.

The Forum was held under the main theme of “Enhancement of Education and Research Collaboration Corresponding to the Globalization of Society,” with the subtopic of “Enhancement of International Education and International Student Mobility in Response to the Globalization” set from an educational point of view. The participants were able to discuss the promotion of double degree programs and student exchange programs between universities in Japan and Taiwan.

From a research perspective, the subtopic “Enhancement of International Research Exchange and Industry-University Collaboration for Innovation” was set, with a lively exchange of views about the promotion of exchange of young researchers between universities in both countries as well as of joint research program for industry-academic collaboration for universities in both countries.

This Forum is held bi-annually taking turns in Taiwan and Japan. The next Forum will be held in 2020 in National Chi Nan University in Taiwan.

Chuo University is a partner institution with ten universities in Taiwan, and student and research exchange has been actively promoted.  In particular, Chuo’s Graduate School of Science and Engineering has signed a double degree agreement with National Central University, preparing for the full-scale launch of the program.
