Chuo Hosts Fulbright Exchange Program Visiting Scholar

This autumn, Professor Nancy Sanders, from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, is a visiting scholar at the Chuo Institute of Social Science. She was selected as a visiting scholar through the “Japan-U.S. Fulbright Exchange Program,” which is supported by both the Japanese and the U.S. governments.

Professor Sanders, who specializes in Education Policy, will spend the autumn semester teaching at Chuo while conducting research on Education Policy. She will give lectures until mid-February, 2018, and visit schools in Japan with the cooperation of professors and Chuo’s Common Education Initiatives Office, and with special support from Professor Chikako Takeishi, Vice-president and Director of the International Center.

On September 28 Professor Sanders gave a lecture in English on “International Assessment” in Professor Masayoshi Koga’s Teacher Training course, “Kyoiku-gaku Gairon 2” (Introduction to Education/Pedagogy). Professor Sanders and Professor Koga had already met at an Education Faculty Seminar, and the class was warmly received by an attentive audience. During her lecture, Professor Sanders pointed out that, “if education policy focuses too much on global test measures, the necessary education in each locality will be neglected.” Students from all five faculties on the Tama Campus attended the lecture (Commerce, Economics, Law, Letters, and Policy Studies), confirming the strong interest in education of Tama students.

Professor Sanders will give regular lectures during her stay at Chuo while conducting her own research in various fields of Education.
