USST Students Visit the Tama Campus
Students from USST explaining how to make paper cutouts
Students from the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) visited Chuo’s Tama Campus on August 2. The 21 students and 4 faculty members were taking part in a summer session study tour to Japan.
Chuo and USST signed a cooperation agreement in 2011 and since then cooperation between the two universities has grown broader and closer among faculties and students. 2016 marked the establishment of the Chuo University Shanghai Office, Chuo’s 3rd overseas hub, at the USST Japanese Culture Center.
Chuo has been hosting students from USST each summer since 2013, tours led by a Chuo alumnus and Director of the USST Japanese Culture Center, Professor He Weiming. The students are chosen from among many applicants in a review process that evaluates their academic achievement, interest in Japan, and enthusiasm for globalization, and their visit to the Tama Campus included participation in a campus tour, a cultural exchange class, and a social gathering. This year’s 11-day tour took the students to companies, tourist facilities, and universities in Tokyo.
Campus Tour
The students divided into two groups for tours in Chinese led by students from Chuo’s Chinese Speaking Society (CSS). The tours visited C Square – the Tama Campus Life Facilities Building, faculty buildings, and the University Library, for an overview of the history, education, and sports facilities at Chuo.
Cultural Exchange Class
Presentation by USST students Students from both universities made presentations in English. USST students learning Japanese had a chance to introduce themselves in Japanese.
A Cultural Exchange Class was conducted in the Commerce Faculty, with students from both universities making presentations on their own countries. Students in Professor Chikako Takeishi’s Faculty Linkage Program (FLP) seminar made a presentation on education and diversity in Japan. In return, USST students divided into four groups to make presentations on Chinese food culture, paper cutouts, a Chinese traditional musical instrument, erhu, and Chinese classic architecture. The room was filled with students’ voices as they enjoyed watching videos, taking quizzes, and receiving paper cutout gifts. Prof. Takeishi is Vice President of Chuo and Director of the Chuo International Center.

Social Gathering
Following the cultural exchange class, a social gathering was held in G Square on the 2nd Floor at Hilltop ’78, during which students from USST, Professor Takeishi’s FLP seminar, and CSS had an opportunity to deepen their understanding and friendship.
