Shanghai University Students Visit the Faculty of Commerce

Students from Shanghai University visited Chuo’s Tama Campus on July 6. The 34 students and one faculty member were taking part in a study tour supported by Ricoh Japan Co., Ltd., visiting Japanese companies and universities as part of activities aimed at helping to develop globally aware Japanese young people.

Their visit to the Tama Campus included a campus tour and participation in Professor Chikako Takeishi’s “Introductory Social Research” class in the Commerce Faculty. Prof. Takeishi is a Chuo vice president and Director of the International Center. The visitors also shared presentations, and had a social gathering with Chuo students, all offering excellent opportunities for cultural exchange.

The students first divided into two groups, led by Chuo students and Chuo exchange students from China, to visit the university Library and the Tama Law Student Research Building, "Honoo-no-Tou."

As part of the “Introductory Social Research” class, students used individual clickers to respond to a survey question prepared in advance by the Shanghai students: “What is the most important feature of school education at Chuo University?”

The class was followed by reciprocal introductions of Chuo and Shanghai University. A Chuo student began the exchange with remarks in Chinese introducing Chuo, followed by a Shanghai student who introduced Shanghai University and its campuses, as well as its educational policy aimed at producing students with leadership skills. Two groups of students from Prof. Takeishi’s seminar then made presentations, one on Japan’s railway system and the other on “real” versus “stated” meaning in Japan.

At the final gathering students enjoyed exchanging opinions on the presentations, chatting about various topics of campus life and hobbies, and, of course, showing each other their smartphone screens.
