Chuo University Shanghai Office Opening Ceremony (Oct. 29)
On October 29, 2016, an opening ceremony and reception were held for the new Chuo University Shanghai Office at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST). The Chuo University Shanghai Office is the 3rd overseas hub that Chuo has opened, following the establishment of the Chuo Pacific Office in Hawaii and the Chuo-Thammasat Collaboration Center in Bangkok.

Before the ceremony, eleven students from Chuo (Professor Takeishi’s seminar) and eleven students from USST organized a one-hour cooperative event. Chuo students made presentations in English and USST students made presentations in Japanese on various topics regarding young people in Japan and China, deepening mutual exchange.

Opening Ceremony

More than eighty participants attended the opening ceremony, including Chuo’s Chancellor and President, Shozaburo Sakai, Executive Regents, Masahiko Omura and Kanichi Hayashi, Vice President and Director of the International Center, Chikako Takeishi, Associate Director of International Center, Stephen Hesse, five other faculty members, eleven students, and fifteen members from the Chuo University Alumni Association Chinese Student Branch. Kazuyuki Katayama, the Consul-General of Japan in Shanghai and other honored guests from related Japanese organizations in Shanghai also attended the ceremony.
From USST, President Hu Shougen, numerous faculty members, guests and students attended the ceremony.
In 2011, Chuo and USST entered into an agreement to foster international cooperation in academic research. Thanks to Chuo alumnus and Director of the USST Japan Culture Center, Professor He Weiming, both universities have been working together to establish the foundation for creating the new office. Chuo’s Shanghai Office aims to play a significant role in gathering information on international exchange, preparing overseas study programs for students, providing research support for faculty members, network formation, and public relations activities. The new Chuo Shanghai Office will enable us to implement higher education programs in close cooperation with USST.

Ribbon-cutting Ceremony
The ribbon-cutting Ceremony was conducted by Chuo’s Chancellor and President Sakai, Vice President Takeishi, USST’s President Hu Shougen and Vice President Tian Weifeng, and Kazuyuki Katayama, the Consul-General of Japan in Shanghai. Cheers and applause rang out as the ribbon was cut to formally open the new office, and Chuo’s Chancellor and President Sakai and USST’s President Hu Shougen unveiled a sign, “Chuo University Shanghai Office”, to be hung at the entrance of the Japan Culture Center.
Reception
USST’s Vice President Tian Weifeng opened the reception with a warm speech. Following a toast by Professor Stephen Hesse, honored guests, faculty members, and students of both universities enjoyed Japanese foods and casual conversation. The reception also included the cutting and serving of a 50 kg raw tuna, a gift from the Chuo University Alumni Association Chinese Student Branch, which surprised and delighted all the participants and attracted a steady stream of photo seekers. As the reception came to an end, Chuo Executive Regent Kanichi Hayashi gave the closing speech.
