Books and documents at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich
My research focuses on the history of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, renowned for Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian. In my paper published in 2025 in Isis, the journal of the History of Science Society, I examined how the archives containing records related to the Observatory were formed. Founded in 1924, the History of Science Society is the oldest international scholarly association in the field of the history of science. Even today, it remains the world's largest society in the history of science, technology, and medicine. Having my paper published in Isis, the leading journal in the English-speaking world, proved to be a deeply rewarding achievement. As summarized below, my paper demonstrates how George Airy, Astronomer Royal at the Royal Observatory in the nineteenth century, set about enriching the Observatory's library for scientific research and systematically classifying and organizing correspondence, reports, and government-related documents. This initiative became the catalyst for creating the prototype of what is now known as the Royal Greenwich Observatory Archives, currently held at the Cambridge University Library. How did Airy organize such a vast number of books and an enormous volume of documents? Furthermore, for what purposes were these carefully assembled?
Expansion and management of written works
Upon assuming the post of Astronomer Royal in 1835, Airy judged the condition of the Observatory's library to be unsatisfactory. Accordingly, he requested an increase in government funding while also soliciting donations of books and journals from government agencies involved in science and technology, universities, and private organizations. The task of managing the resulting increase in books and journals fell to his assistants. However, they were also responsible for observational and research duties, and attention to library management was often insufficient. Airy devoted himself to remedying this situation and addressed the continuously growing collection by improving classification methods and expanding the bookshelves. During Airy's tenure, the status and capabilities of his assistants improved significantly compared with earlier periods, enabling them to achieve results through specialized research and increasing the number of researchers elected as Fellows of the Royal Society of London and the Royal Astronomical Society. These assistants were able to deepen their research by making full use of the Observatory's well-stocked collection of books, journals, and observational records. Airy fully recognized the importance of maintaining the library to enhance the research environment, and he thus ensured a high degree of precision in its management. Scholars have noted that Airy's philosophy and character in scientific research were marked by an exceptional commitment to accuracy, order, and rigor. I argue that his philosophy extended not only to observational activities, but also to the organization of the library.
Collection and management of manuscripts
Airy also devoted considerable effort to the organization of observational records, correspondence, and other unpublished documents. Of particular note is his enthusiastic pursuit of documents related to the Observatory's past. For example, the records of the Board of Longitude, which functioned as a government advisory body from 1714 to 1828, had been divided between the Admiralty and the Royal Society. Airy requested the transfer of records from these institutions, thereby establishing a system in which they could be consolidated and managed at the Royal Observatory. He also acquired materials from the Royal Society, including the observational records of James Bradley, eighteenth-century Astronomer Royal, as well as other documents relating to the Observatory. His approach of actively seeking manuscripts, organizing them systematically, and placing them in proper storage conditions resembles the work of a modern archivist. As a government scientist, Airy also served on various parliamentary and central government committees related to science and technology. For Airy to provide effective recommendations in these roles, it was essential that the vast quantity of relevant documents within the Observatory be properly managed.
Use of manuscripts and the history of the Observatory
Airy's meticulous techniques for document management were applied to scientific research procedures. In particular, his techniques supported the organization of observational records and their prompt publication. Moreover, one of the purposes of his manuscript collection was to provide materials for future research in the history of science. Airy himself was a practitioner of cutting-edge astronomy and did not engage directly in historical research, apart from studies in biblical scholarship and on Caesar's landing in Britain. However, his assistants utilized the collected materials to publish papers on the history of the Royal Observatory in general-interest literary journals. In these writings, the achievements of John Flamsteed, the first Astronomer Royal, who left numerous records of stellar observations, were discussed positively. The papers also emphasized the Observatory's social significance as an institution upholding a long tradition of positional astronomy.
Astronomy underwent a major shift in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The emerging field of astrophysics began to dominate, gradually displacing the traditional practice of positional astronomy from the forefront of the discipline. Within the academic community, vigorous debates arose concerning the expansion of astrophysical research at the Royal Observatory and the establishment of new national observatories elsewhere. To assert the significance of the Observatory and the tradition of positional astronomy, Airy and his assistants sought to respond to this situation by appealing to the Observatory's past and its traditions. To this end, they aimed to collect manuscripts that recorded the Observatory's history and activities and to make use of them as needed. While the formation of archives and the analysis of library catalogs have already become well-established themes in the history of science, studies focusing on observatories and astronomical institutions in the nineteenth-century remain relatively few. With this in mind, there is an urgent need to advance comparable research that takes into account the circumstances of leading observatories in various countries.

Yuto Ishibashi completed the Doctoral Program in the Graduate School of Social Sciences, Hitotsubashi University. He holds a Ph.D. in sociology. Before assuming his current position, he served as Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Modern Society and Culture, Niigata University and as Associate Professor in the Faculty of Letters, Chuo University.
