テーマ　　なぜ子どもは「だけ」を誤って解釈するのか：視覚的精査仮説の提案

                      Why children misinterpret dake ‘only’: proposing a visual inspection hypothesis

要　旨    Crain et al. (1994) から Sugawara et al. (2024) に至るまで、子どもは焦点表現 (例：onlyやだけ)を大人と同様には解釈しないことが長年報告されてきた。特に、「猫さんだけが旗を持っている」のように主語に「だけ」が付与された文において、子どもは「猫さんが旗だけを持っている」といった間違った解釈を示すことが、通言語的に、そして6歳ごろまで観察されている。

これまで、この現象を説明するために、「だけ」に関する統語的知識が大人と同じではないとする仮説、焦点は文中の最も埋め込まれた構成素に置くことがデフォルトであるために間違った解釈が生じるとする仮説、あるいは実験文が提示される際の文脈が十分に自然ではなかったとする仮説など、さまざまな仮説が提案されてきた。

本研究では、主語＋「だけ」文の困難さは、「テスト文の真偽値を判断する際に、絵を精査  (inspect) する過程で生じる認知的負荷」に起因するという仮説を立て、この仮説を検証するために2つの実験を行った。その結果、いずれの実験においても本仮説を支持する結果が得られた。

From Crain et al. (1994) to Sugawara et al. (2024), it has long been reported that children do not interpret focus expressions (e.g., only) in the same way as adults. In particular, in sentences where only attaches to the subject, such as “Only the cat is holding a flag,” children often incorrectly interpret it as “The cat is only holding a flag.” This incorrect intrerpretation has been observed cross-linguistically and persists until around six years of age.

To account for this phenomenon, a variety of hypotheses have been proposed, including the hypothesis that children’s syntactic knowledge of focus particles is not yet adult-like, the hypothesis that children rely on a default bias in which focus is assigned to the most embedded constituent in the sentence, and the hypothesis that the experimental contexts in which test sentences were presented were not fully felicitous.

The present study proposes that the difficulty associated with subject-focus sentences arises from the cognitive load incurred during the process of inspecting visual stimuli when judging the truth value of test sentences. To test this hypothesis, two experiments were conducted. The results of both experiments provide support for this hypothesis.
