テーマ　　Unearthening Empires: Mudbrick, Power, and Adaptation in Western Asia

要　旨　　This talk explores how earthen architecture shaped, and was shaped by, Western Asia communities over millenia. While empire narratives often highlight stone monuments, the infrastructure of imperial power often lay in more humble materials: mudbrick. Through a comparative study of Assur—the first capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire (911–879 BCE)—the Uruk-period colony of Shaka Hora in Iraqi Kurdistan, and the Iron Age coastal site of Ashdod-Yam in the Levant, this project investigates how empires deployed earthen architecture as both a practical and ideological tool.

At Assur, geochemical analyses of mudbrick samples reveal intricate systems of resource procurement, technological skill transfer, and adaptation to environmental stress. These findings are placed alongside emerging evidence from earlier period such as the Chalcolithic site of Shaka Hora, where early urban colonial expansion during the Uruk period demonstrate how material practices were standardized and transmitted across distant landscapes. Likewise, the Iron Age architecture at Ashdod-Yam illustrates how imperial strategies of building and environmental adaptation continued along the Levantine coast under shifting imperial powers.
