テーマ　：　部分集合の原理と論理接続詞の解釈の第二言語習得

要　旨　：　日本語と英語とでは、否定文中の論理接続詞の解釈が異なることが知られている（Goro 2007, Crain 2012）。先行研究(Grüter, Lieberman & Gualmini, 2010）では、日本語が母語の英語学習者にとって、英語の選言接続詞の解釈は困難であることが指摘されている。本研究では，英語および中国語を母語とする日本語学習者が、日本語の選言接続詞と連言接続詞をどの程度正しく解釈できるのかを実験を行い調査した結果を報告する。

テーマ　：　Ditransitive Sentences in Japanese: Hierarchical Asymmetry and Erroneous Associations in Children’s Interpretation

要　旨　：　This talk explores Japanese-speaking children’s language acquisition, focusing on their interpretation of sentences with the focus-sensitive operator, /only/ (‘dake’ in Japanese).

Building upon Crain et al.’s (1994) findings, we investigate children’s persistent tendency to misinterpret sentences like “Only the cat is holding a flag” as “The cat is only holding a flag.” Endo’s (2004) examination of Japanese-speaking children's understanding of sentences with -/dake/ and -/sika…nai/, revealed a marked preference for object-/only/ interpretations. Also, Mochizuki et al.’s (2021) study using right-dislocated sentences demonstrated that children showed a preference for object-/only/ interpretations regardless of the surface position of the term. This suggests that children associate /only/ with the object in a reconstructed structure.
Our research question explores whether hierarchical asymmetry extends to ditransitive sentences, examining the potential erroneous association of subject-/only/ with object and indirect object-/only/ with direct object. Our study, involving 63 Japanese-speaking children, utilizes truth-value judgment tasks with subject-/only/ and indirect object-/only/ sentences. Results suggest an intervention effect of indirect object in the erroneous association with direct object, highlighting the nuanced interplay of hierarchical structures in children's language development. The findings contribute to our understanding of the acquisition in Japanese and offer insights into the derivation of ditransitive sentences in the language.
