タイトル    ‘Behind a guard of thick glass’: George Orwell Imagining Transparency

要旨  Usually when we think about George Orwell and glass we think about his well-known analogy regarding the transparency of ‘good prose’, which he claimed ‘is like a windowpane’. Orwell’s thinking about the materiality of glass itself is less familiar. He never wrote an essay about glass, in the way that he wrote essays about magazines, books, food, and cups of tea. But Orwell was clearly fascinated by glass, all the same: by its material properties, by its symbolic implications, and by its beauty. In Orwell’s most famous novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), glass is a vector for oppression, but it’s also the occasion for a range of thoughts about the feelings prompted by translucence. This talk will cover such issues as the magical strangeness of glass, the paradoxes of transparency, the politics of brittleness, and the meanings of glitter. Its goal is to encourage Orwell’s readers to think a little differently about what glass meant to him, and what he understood glass to mean to the world, in a post-war age of violating totalitarianisms.

ネイサン・ウォデル教授（英国バーミンガム大学）。A Bright Cold Day: The Wonder of George Orwell (Oneworld, 2025)の著者であり、The Oxford Handbook of George Orwell (Oxford University Press, 2025)の編者。また、The Cambridge Companion to Nineteen Eighty-Four (Cambridge University Press, 2020；邦訳『ジョージ・オーウェル『一九八四年』の現在地　文学・思想・メディアの交差点』（水声社、2025年）)や、Oxford World’s Classics版のオーウェル小説A Clergyman’s Daughter (Oxford University Press, 2021)の編集も手がけている。その他の著書に、Moonlighting: Beethoven and Literary Modernism (Oxford University Press, 2019)や、Andrzej Gąsiorekとの共編著であるWyndham Lewis: A Critical Guide (Edinburgh University Press, 2015)などがある。
