テーマ　　The development of Theory of Mind and pragmatics

要　旨　　It has long been noted, from neo-Gricean and related perspectives, that Theory of Mind and pragmatics are closely related in cognitive development. In this lecture, I will first review milestones of early developments of Theory of Mind, pragmatics and their relationship. I will then report new research that indicates seemingly paradoxical developmental trajectories: over developmental time, to the degree that children become more proficient in Theory of Mind, they become, prima facie, less proficient in other cognitive domains. For example, once children come to master False Belief and related Theory of Mind tasks from around age 4, they suddenly start to fail all kinds of control tasks that they had previously mastered. In this lecture, I will review new evidence from our lab and others to suggest that these surprising patterns reflect pragmatic effects: once children acquire some proficiency at pragmatics, they initially cannot believe that sincere interlocutors would ask them such trivial questions. Wider implications for the developmental relations of social cognition and language will be discussed.
