講演題目: Multiferroic effects in liquid crystals: macroscopic dynamics

 

概 要:

Key question addressed in this seminar: importance of multiferroic effects on macroscopic and mesoscopic scales in liquid crystals. By multiferroic in liquid crystals we denote systems that are liquid crystalline and show at least one additional type of long range order such as ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, antiferroelectric and antiferromagnetic. Systems covered here for their macroscopic properties include:
1) Ferromagnetic nematics [1], the best studied multiferroic liquid crystalline system for which quantitative agreement between experiments and modeling was achieved.
2) Ferroelectric smectic A with a macroscopic polarization parallel to the layer normal [2].
3) Antiferroelectric smectics with a staggered macroscopic polarization parallel to the layering [3].
4) Ferroelectric smectic C_F, which are truly biaxial fluid ferroelectrics [4].
