New ligands for catalytic applications: impact and activity of mesoionic carbenes

アブストラクト:
 N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have had a substantial impact on organometallic chemistry and on catalysis in particular, which has been largely associated with the unique bonding features of these ligands. The covalent metal-ligand bond combined with the much stronger donor ability of carbenes as compared to phosphines has provided access to a variety of new reaction pathways and increased activities in catalytic reactions.   
We have been interested in furthering the specific (donor) properties of the NHC ligand in order to mediate the activation of strong and typically less reactive bonds. To this end, we have been actively pursuing the development and application of mesoionic N-heterocyclic carbenes, i.e. homologues of classical NHCs that do not feature a neutral resonance structure. These mesoionic carbenes display exceptionally strong donor ability when compared to other formally neutral ligands such as phosphines and classical Arduengo-type carbenes. We have recently obtained evidence that the mesoionic character also entails ligand-centered reactivity, which has been exploited in bond activation catalysis. This presentation will discuss some fundamental aspects and unique reactivity patterns of these carbenes, and will highlight most recent developments in (oxidation) catalysis (for an example, see below).
