テーマ   Social grammar: From acquisition to conventionalization(社会文法：習得から慣習化へ)　

要旨    If you are speaking a language that features elements similar to the English particle please, you might be familiar with the common rule taught to children “to always use please” when asking for something. From early on, we teach our children this rule as the default of requesting practices because one can (almost) never be pragmatically wrong when using please. The reason is that the directive particle please as well as comparable means in other languages add politeness to a request, and there are only very few social situations where politeness per se might be infelicitous. In this lecture, I will go beyond please and explore the landscape of grammatical expressions of social meaning such as sentence types, pronouns, particles, and modal verbs. I will present production and comprehension data from both adults and children, indicating developmental paths as well as clusters of linguistic forms depending on their felicity in different social scenarios.
