テーマ    Null Arguments in Heritage Japanese （継承語としての日本語における項の省略）　

要 旨     Arguments can be categorized into three kinds: overt referential nouns, overt pronouns, and null arguments. These argument types vary on several levels, but importantly, they vary in terms of the level of specificity they encode. Overt referential pronouns are the most specific, overt pronouns are less specific, and null arguments are the least specific. In this talk, we address how heritage learners of Japanese and Spanish in the United States use (over-use or under-use) three different argument types. We discuss some novel experiments which gauge whether heritage learners apply the English setting to Japanese/Spanish, or whether they acquire the relevant specificity settings of the three argument types early in development.
