テーマ1  Facing Evolving Natural Science: The Considerations Regarding Musical Aesthetics of Franz Brendel (1811–1868) and Eduard Hanslick (1825–1904) and Their Relationship to the “Study of Nature”.

要旨1   ウィーンを中心に活躍した音楽批評家ハンスリックEduard Hanslick（1825-1904）と、ライプツィヒで活躍した音楽著述家ブレンデルKarl Franz Brendel（1811-1868）は、その音楽思想が対立したことで知られる。しかし、近代自然科学と人文科学の相克において最前線に立っていた点で、両者は共通している。報告では、ハンスリックによる『音楽美論』（1854）と、ブレンデルの『芸術・生命・学問への示唆』（1856-）の記述から、自然科学への態度を抽出することで、両者の関係を捉え直したい。

テーマ2  Intermedial Transformations of Musical Time: Analyzing and Visualizing Wagner’s Tristan Prelude from Score to Screen.

要旨2   This lecture examines how Richard Wagner’s Tristan Prelude has been analyzed, visualized, and transformed across media. The first part revisits the music-theoretical discourse on the Prelude’s form. The most influential analyses all rely on visual figures of thought: Leichtentritt’s dynamic graph, Lorenz’s symmetrical arch, and Morgan’s circle. With the help of metaphor theory, I ask what such figures can and cannot capture in a music of extreme slowness, “infinite melody,” and constant repetition. I then propose the spiral as an alternative figure connecting circularity with linearity: what returns is never quite the same. The second part turns to Lars von Trier’s Melancholia (2011), whose opening sequence presents nearly the entire Prelude in extreme slow motion. Based on interviews with the film’s music supervisor, I show how the Prelude was recontextualized and musically altered through montage, a reinforced cello melody, and sound design. In this way, the film offers its own interpretation of the Prelude’s form. Like the form diagrams, the film does not simply reflect the music. It shapes how we hear it, well beyond the cinema.
