講 師：       John Christopher Wells 氏 (ロンドン大学名誉教授)

テーマ：       London English： From Cockney to Multicultural

要 旨：
            Recent sociolinguistic studies have shown that the
            traditional Cockney accent/dialect is no longer
            prevalent in the inner heartland of London.  Most of
            the white working-class are now more likely to live in
             the outer boroughs and surrounding new towns.
            Following decades of immigration from the Caribbean
            and elsewhere, the population of the inner city is
            now ethnically and culturally very diverse. Among
            locally born young people of all ethnicities a new
            variety of English has come into being, referred to by
             journalists as ‘Jafaican’ and by linguists as
            ‘Multicultural London English’.  We can date its
            origins to the early 1980s.
