Multi-modal man-machine communication; the core technology for
industrial robotics in the future

The international industry is gradually pushed towards smaller
and smaller batch sizes and short delivery times to satisfy the
market’s requirements. This has a considerable impact on
industrial robot systems which need to produce many products and
product variants efficiently, but in addition, have a short
reconfiguration time. Rapid setup, “easy to understand” user
interfaces, synergic man-robot collaboration and instant access
to support and expert competence, are important key works to
achieve this; especially due to the fact that the small and
medium sized companies (SME) are becoming the core of the new
industrial structure.
To meet this demand, the core knowledge is how to get the
communication between the industrial robot and the human
operator, to an efficient, however intuitive level. This applies
to robot programming, run time operation of the robot, man-robot
collaboration, and remote access to support / expertise. However,
due to the complex communication picture and sometimes
considerable amount of data to be transferred, traditional
methods of communication like screen, joy stick, key board etc,
are insufficient.
This presentation, will be based upon current and future
industrial needs for robot-human communication, and enter into a
discussion about how to achieve the synergy of combining
traditional, different research fields to achieve multi-modal
communication by utilizing multiple human senses in parallel.
