Dr. Daisuke Akagi, a cardiovascular surgeon and researcher at The University of Tokyo Hospital, delivered a guest lecture in the Mahendra Singh seminar (専門演習) class on September 29th, 2026. Dr. Akagi holds advanced degrees in medicine, including a PhD, and is currently pursuing an MBA. Topic of the lecture was “Management & leadership in healthcare and medical industry”.
This was a rare opportunity for the students to learn about the medical, healthcare, and pharmaceutical industries. The importance of these industries is increasing as the demand for bilingual young professionals, even with the non-medical background is increasing.
Dr. Akagi sharing insights from his experience across medicine, research, and management, including his MBA journey.
Students learnt about the balance expected between financial sustainability and social contribution in these fields.
He emphasized the importance of disease prevention and eradication through research and preventive healthcare, while also highlighting the growing relevance of management skills in the medical and pharmaceutical industries. He encouraged students to recognize that knowledge of business and management is valuable and applicable across all industries, including healthcare and pharmaceuticals.
The students showed strong interest and curiosity throughout the lecture and Q&A session, engaging with topics and perspectives that they rarely have the opportunity to learn about.
