題目:Resonant coupling between thermal emission in specific near-field modes and the atoms of a neighbouring gas

概要:
The talk will describe our recent activities in LPL-Paris13 U. The measurements of the atom-surface interaction has been a topic of interest for years, mostly relying on selective reflection spectroscopy at interfaces. Aside from a new development orientedtowards analogous measurements with molecules -in the range of vibrational spectroscopy, implying a change of technology for wavelengths ~10 μm-, our activity was centered towards the investigation of the interaction between thermal emission from a surface and the neighbouring atoms of a gas.
A major effect of the thermal emission is that it not "broadband" as commonly expected for "blackbody radiation". Rather, in the near field, it exhibits specific modes of emission. These modes are connected to the specific bulk resonances of the material. Playing with the fine structure doublet of Cs(7P) at a sapphire interface, we could realize a situation where the two fine-structure components behave very differently in the temperature-dependence of the atom-surface interaction. Indeed, only a single state (7P1/2) exhibits virtual couplings in coincidence with the sapphire surface modes. Moreover, the sapphire surface modes themselves evolve with temperature, and the atom-surface interaction can be seen as a complementary information, specific but potentially of a high-precision, to determine the evolution of the surface modes with temperature.
