“The story of B-29 cenotaphs all over Japan”

This cenotaph is at the Hachimenyama Park in Nakatsushi, Oita prefecture. Mourning for dead U.S. soldiers started and a memorial pillar in 1946. However, the existence of this pillar was gradually forgotten. Sodo Yamamoto thought this situation so bad. So he established this park in 1970. Now Zenjiro Kiyomoto maintains this park. He said that this park would not exist without the cooperation with local folks in Nakatsushi. The memorial service in Nakatsushi will be 50th anniversary. It is rare that a memorial service continues for such a long time. Mr. Kiyomoto wishes people will never forget this park and the existence of the dead Japanese and U.S. soldiers now and forever.

Following question motivated us to start this project. “How many cenotaphs which mourns for dead U.S. soldiers? ” “Why do Japanese mourn for dead U.S. soldiers who were called brutal U.S. army? ” In this project, we found that there are over 30 cenotaphs which mourns for the dead Japanese and U.S. soldiers. This time, we interviewed over 20 people. Among them, there are people who was born after World War Ⅱ. Many of them who we interviewed said, “After the war finished, we became same human. We became no mutual enemy. So that is why we mourn for them.” The answer lies in Japanese spirits.
