- Paper Title -
Exporter’s Productivity and the Cash-In-Advance Payment: Transaction-Level Analysis of Turkish Textile and Clothing Exports (輸出業者の生産性と前払い決済:トルコの繊維・衣料品輸出の取引レベル分析)

- Abstract -
The paper examined the relations between an exporter’s productivity and its choice of payment method, focusing on the cash-in-advance payment in international transactions, by analyzing Turkish textiles and clothing data at the transaction level from 2009 to 2017. The study revealed that an exporter with high productivity is more likely to adopt cash-in-advance payment, which reduces the risk of uncollectible receivables. The authors further clarify the mechanism behind this tendency through theoretical analysis, showing that a high-productivity company is better positioned to earn profits that offset the negotiation costs associated with adopting cash-in-advance payment.

Message from the Associate Professor Yoshimi
It is a great honor for our study, focused on Türkiye, to be recognized within the country itself. I am deeply grateful for the financial support provided through the KAKENHI grants 20H01518 and 20KK0289.

The study sheds light on the realities faced by developing countries, which often have no options but to accept post-shipment payment, underscoring the importance of advancing trade facilitation in these countries. Furthermore, small and medium-sized enterprises in developed countries, including Japan, tend to hold weaker positions in trade negotiations as well. Therefore, identifying measures to control trade-related risks through appropriate payment method selection is an issue of critical importance. The choice of payment method by individual firms can also provide broader implications, including international transmissions of macroeconomic policies.

I will continue to contribute to society by providing research-based information that benefits business activities and economic policy management.
