Dr. Eyo Shiaw Jia, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Global and Interdisciplinary Studies of Hosei University, delivered a special guest lecture titled Introduction to Stock Investing for students at the Corporate Finance class (instructor: George Wang) on May 18, 2026. Dr. Eyo specializes in finance and investment education, and his lecture introduced students to the fundamental concepts of financial markets and stock investing in a clear and practical manner. Through a combination of theoretical explanations, market examples, and classroom exercises, he encouraged students to understand the role of stock markets in the global economy and to develop basic financial literacy for personal and professional decision-making.

In his lecture, Dr. Eyo Shiaw Jia introduced students to the foundations of financial markets and stock investing. He explained the role of financial markets in facilitating the trading of securities such as stocks, bonds, and foreign exchange, and introduced major global stock exchanges including the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The lecture also covered key stock market indexes such as the S&P 500 and the Nikkei 225, helping students understand how investors evaluate overall market performance. Dr. Eyo further explained how investors earn returns through capital appreciation and dividends, while introducing different investment approaches including growth investing and value investing. He also discussed important financial indicators used in fundamental analysis, such as the PE ratio, earnings per share, and profit margins, as well as technical analysis tools used to identify market trends and trading opportunities.

The second part of the lecture focused on stock market behavior, volatility, and recent developments in the Japanese stock market. Dr. Eyo explained the concepts of bull and bear markets, historical stock market returns, and the impact of uncertainty on investor sentiment and market fluctuations. Using real-world examples, he highlighted the growing international attention toward Japanese stocks, particularly the investments made by Warren Buffett in major Japanese trading companies such as Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsui Corporation. The lecture examined both optimistic and pessimistic views regarding Japan’s recent market performance, including concerns about overvaluation and enthusiasm surrounding technological and AI-related growth. In concluding the session, Dr. Eyo emphasized the importance of disciplined long-term investing, diversification, and emotional control in investment decision-making. Referring to the philosophy of Benjamin Graham, he encouraged students to conduct careful research, distinguish investment from speculation, and maintain a long-term perspective when participating in the stock market.
