Chuo University declares its commitment to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and pledges to contribute to the development of an equitable world through research, education and outreach.
Chuo University has established "Fostering the Ability to Apply Knowledge to Practice" as its founding principle, and it has put this idea into practice through research-based education ever since. Specifically, it has contributed to the solution of real-world challenges through the training of individuals who have the skills to put 'Knowledge into Action'.
At Chuo University, we have thus developed research and education as fundamental tools to solve the tasks we face as a human society. We apply these tools in the increasingly globalized settings of today in which ever more complex challenges extend beyond geographic regions and academic fields. Policies that generate benefits for one area - geographical as well as thematic - may produce opposite outcomes for other areas, and this at times leads to violent conflicts in which many lose their lives. The Sustainable Development Goals that were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 reflect this situation very clearly. We therefore believe that it is our responsibility to ensure that research and education are focused on the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in a balanced manner to create an equitable world.
We hereby declare that in order to fulfill its responsibility towards global society Chuo University will carry out the following activities. We ask not only current staff and students to join us in these efforts, but also all members of society, starting with our own graduates.
December 07, 2020 President Tadahiko FUKUHARA
The global society that we aim to create according to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their underlying principles is a diverse one, and sacrificing this diversity in the course of attempts to solve problems is not a suitable approach. Chuo University adopted a 'Declaration on Diversity' in October 2017 and established a 'Diversity Center' in April 2020. Fostering diversity will be a fundamental platform for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
At Chuo University, we believe that various methodological approaches and resources need to be combined, and that problems must be analyzed and discussed from many angles in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The establishment of the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science in April 2020 is part of these efforts. We shall integrate the diverse resources for research and education that are available at Chuo University and link up with partners in society at large to solve the challenges we face in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals.
At Chuo University, we will use our strengths in research and education to identify concrete goals and tasks that we need to engage in jointly with our partners in society, and share them publicly. We invite our graduates, local communities, businesses, government offices and international partners to collaborate with us in these activities.
At Chuo University, we will foster human resources who can take on the responsibility of building a fair and equitable society on a global scale, balancing the needs of human society with the ecological systems on which its existence depends.
