取り組み概要、意義、成果

関東地方の里地・里山を中心に、生物多様性と生態系サービスに関する研究や教育、社会連携を展開しています。具体的な活動としては、環境省が運営する、里地・里山の保全や再生を目的とした制度（生物多様性保全上重要な里地里山、モニタリングサイト1000・里地）の対象となっている地域の生物多様性と生態系サービスについて研究しています。環境省生物多様性センターの協力をいただき、関東地方の里地・里山のモニタリング調査で得られた植物種に関するデータを学生と一緒に分析しています。管理に携わっている団体のアンケートやヒアリング調査を行い、管理活動と種多様性の関係について調べています。現在、中央大学の多摩キャンパスに残存する里山の研究も始めています。このため、FLPゼミの学生と共に大学事務と他の教員の協力体制を築きます。

 

【Theme of the initiative】Biodiversity and ecosystem services of satochi-satoyama landscapes（Faculty of Science and Engineering Professor Stefan Hotes）

Overview of initiatives, significance, and results

Focusing on the traditional cultural landscapes (satochi-satoyama) of the Kanto region around Tokyo in central Japan, the activities cover research, education and outreach in relation to biological diversity and ecosystem services. To answer research questions in relation to the distribution and abundance of plants and animals of satoyama landscapes, we use data collected through coordinated efforts of scientists, the administration and citizens, e.g. in the scheme '500 key areas for the conservation of biodiversity in satoyama landscapes' or the '1000 monitoring sites' scheme. We have used these data to analyze the role of management activities such as the removal of ground vegetation, and we have explored opportunities for upscaling information on plant species diversity using vegetation maps. With cultural landscapes such as satoyama, continuous management is necessary to maintain biodiversity and ecosystem services. We are currently studying the remnants of traditional coppice forests that persist on the Tama Campus of Chuo University as part of the Faculty Linkage Program (FLP). Through these activities, we are building ties to other academic staff and students as well as to people in charge of managing the university grounds. We are also engaging in the development of international partnerships for studying and conserving satoyama landscapes through the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative.
