　　　　　Annotations as a specific character of the 18th-century editions of Shakespeare

　　　　  ---mainly focusing on Capell’s edition (1768)---

要　旨：

シェイクスピア作品編纂本に注釈が付されているのは当然のことであり、それが付されていない方が

まれである――われわれの常識ではそうである。だが、シェイクスピア編纂本出版の歴史をみると、

注釈は18世紀から始まる。それは、ひとえにシェイクスピア作品を古典文学と同等の扱いをしようと

する編纂者、版元、読者の意向の反映である。しかしながら、18世紀に出版された全集本に付された

注釈は、当初からわれわれが現在当然視するようなものではなかった。ポープ版 (1725)からその

傾向は顕著になるものの、審美的傾向を有するポープ流注釈が主流になることはなかった。

シェイクスピア本文編纂にあたり、シェイクスピア第4フォリオに基づく本文をtextus receptusと

して採用せず、最初期印刷本に基づく独自の本文編纂を行った Edward Capellは作品全集を1768年

に刊行した。

そして、その全集本に対する注釈本3巻を出版する (1774-83)。

本発表では、18世紀のシェイクスピア作品全集の注釈を概観しながら、ケイペル版に焦点を絞り、

その出版が18世紀（及び、それ以降の）シェイクスピア受容にいかなる影響を与えたかを検討する。

Apart from the general/textual introductions, the ‘annotations’, which are broadly meant here to compose of notes, indexes, source material, etc., given to the editions of the complete works of Shakespeare published in the 18th century had been unknown to the readers of Shakespeare until the 18th century. Historically, the trend began with the Pope’s edition (1725) but the aesthetical Pope-style annotations did not become mainstream.

In editing Shakespeare’s text, Edward Capell did not make use of the Shakespeare fourth folio (1685) as the copy-text, while most 18th-century editors prior to him received it as such (i.e. textus receptus). Instead, he compiled his own text based on the earliest printed quartos and the first folio (1623) and published his edition of Shakespeare in 1768. In addition, Capell published three books of annotations (1774-83) on his edition of the works of Shakespeare.

In this presentation, the speaker will review the ‘annotations’ of the main 18th-century Shakespeare editions, mostly focusing on the Capell’s edition, and examine how its publication has influenced the reception of Shakespeare in the 18th century (and beyond).
