164.Fantastic creatures of the world

Outline Periods
The folklorist Charles Joisten, who spent the middle of the 20th century interviewing villagers in the French Alps (Dauphine and Savoie), collected a wealth of lore about "fantastic beings" such as fairies, barbarians, household spirits, demons, sorcerers, werewolves, ghosts, phantom horses, and dragon snakes. Our research focuses on several categories of "illusory existence" proposed by Joisten and seeks to find similar examples in east and west Eurasia, illuminating them from an interdisciplinary perspective based on literature, history, mythology, ethnology (folklore), and art history.
