「Optically responsive polymer/LC systems」
Responsive thin films of polymer/liquid crystal mixtures whose optical properties can be changed using light and electric fields will be explored. Recent work on dynamic transmission and reflection gratings formed through complex, periodic phase separation processes is explored. Several systems possessing both mesogenic and non-mesogenic monomer systems are explored across the concentration landscape. Also presented is recent work on the utilization of diffractive waveplates to enable compact, high optical quality,dynamic optical elements. These thin films which possess anisotropy in the x-y plane can be coupled to systems which possess periodic anisotropy in the z-plane (cholesteric materials) to enable a new generation of dynamic optical elements.
