UNEXPECTED RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CILIA AND HUMAN HEALTH

アブストラクト:
Cilia are the oldest known cell organelle, widely distributed among eukaryotic cells. Among other places, motile cilia are present in the adult human respiratory system, on sperm and at the embryonic node , where they participate in left-right symmetry determination. Mutations that affect motility result in PCD, primary ciliary dyskinesia, whose symptoms include respiratory disease, male infertility and situs inversus. In many other tissues, including kidney cells, fibroblasts and neurons cells possess single non-motile, sensory cilia called ' Primary cilia'. Mutations in building these cilia or in concentrating key receptors for signaling in the ciliary membrane result in severe embryological deficiencies and a variety of pathologies and syndromes, known as ciliopathies. Understanding the ciliary biology, in particular how cilary signals affect cell organization, may lead to important advances in molecular medicine.
