テーマ: A Japanese Kingdom of God on American Soil:
Ebina Danjo and the Moral Education of Japanese
Americans
要 旨: In the early twentieth century, not just overlapping
empires, but overlapping networks of “civilizers” and
evangelists imposed their understanding of the world
(and depending on who they were, even eternity)
onto Japanese immigrants and colonial settlers
(those Japanese who began migrating to Japanese
colonies in great numbers). In this presentation, I will
trace one such node in this network, the efforts of
the Japanese minister Ebina Danjo, to instill in his
compatriots in the U.S. a sense of moral purpose and
calling to contribute to the “overseas expansion”
(kaigai hatten) of the Japanese people, but through
“non-literal” (non-territorial) and Christian means. In
the case of Ebina, his visits to the U.S. west coast
were part of an elaborate effort organized by local
elites who shared with the anti-Japanese
exclusionists a dislike for the average Japanese
immigrant, and yet (perhaps begrudgingly) appointed
them as potential allies to pursue a much loftier goal
of transformation and redemption.
