テーマ:Contemporary English pronunciation: Challenges for Japanese learners

The many Japanese words of English origin help Japanese learners with vocabulary building, but learners often pronounce these simply as in Japanese. Japanese learners must go beyond Romaji, and a proper understanding of phonetic symbols can help.

Consonant challenges will be considered not just in the traditional terms of voice, place and manner, but also in terms of auditory-acoustic strength and timbre. Vowels will be considered with special attention to vowel length and to contemporary British qualities.

Study of English rhythm and intonation is not only helpful in improving the nativeness of a learner's accent, but also important for intelligibility. For instance, weak function words play an important role in English grammar; Japanese learners often fail to understand English questions as these often begin with weak forms. In this as in all areas, production and perception work need to go together.

Geoff Lindsey博士は、現在ロンドン大学(UCL)のHonorary Lecturerであり、夏期英語音声学講座の運営責任者を務められています。この音声学講座は、100年以上の歴史を持ち、この講座の後に設置した、中央大学学生特化コースの集中講座も担当してくださっています。今回は、日本人に重要な音声学上のポイントを含め、現在のイギリス英語発音の変化や諸課題について講演していただきます。
