テーマ： 「English articles: A droshophila of second language research」

要 旨： One of the central questions of second language (L2) research is why learning L2 grammars can be difficult: what forces shape the patterns of L2 use and development, what underlying knowledge and processing mechanisms non-native speakers develop, and to what degree these converge on what native speakers know or do.
But what can research on two small words – the and a in English – tell us about any of these? Quite a lot, I will argue in this talk. Focusing on difficulties that English articles pose to speakers of languages that do not have a corresponding property, I will report a number of recent experiments that looked into the mechanisms of L2 production and comprehension.
